  • Thoraxklinik at Heidelberg University Hospital
  • German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ)
  • European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL)

Research Profile

TLRC in Heidelberg aims to improve diagnostics and therapy of chronic lung diseases of children and adults in close exchange between basic and clinical research.

Of central interest are mechanisms of the development of common inherited and acquired chronic and malignant lung diseases as cystic fibrosis, COPD and lung cancer. Scientists of TLRC want to find new therapeutical points of action as well as new causal therapies. Using modern techniques of immune and molecular biology and next generation sequencing, one of TLRC's goals in basic research is to decipher molecular causes of chronic airway diseases.

Current research projects point to the misregulation of airway surfice dehydration. Researchers hope that the results will give insight into the pathogenesis of mucus obstruction and chronic inflammation in cystic fibrosis and other chronic obstructive lung diseases as COPD and asthma. Another field of TLRC is systems biology in order to improve the understanding of molecular origins of lung cancer.

New diagnostic and therapeutic strategies are tested in clinical studies in order to render them available promptly for the patients.

Director of TLRC is Prof. Dr. Hans-Ulrich Kauczor. He is supported by Dr. Birgit Teucher as DZL manager.
