Research profile

The partner institutions of BREATH collaborate with the aim to improve medical health care and life quality of patients with lung diseases. Moreover, BREATH closely collaborates with the REBIRTH Cluster of Excellence. One focus in clinical research is in the field of transplantation and stem cell therapy. The Department of Pneumology is engaged in the Lung Tranplantation Program and active in research on infectious diseases, allergies and pulmonary hypertension. The basic research programme focuses on cellular inflammation of the lung as well as proteolytic enzymes. Researchers at the Fraunhofer-ITEM are interested in the pathophysiology of allergic diseases and use a state of the art pollen exposition room for research.

Scientists of the University Hannover share their expertise in th area of public health care system and health care economics. Finally, the German CAPNETZ network (Network of Excellence Community Acquired Pneumonia) has been integrated in the DZL. CAPNETZ owns the largest data base of patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP).
