ARCN – Airway Research Center North

Lung diseases still belong to the most deadly diseases – in Germany as well as worldwide. Therefore, the Airway Research Center North (ARCN), as part of the German Center for Lung Research (Deutsches Zentrum für Lungenforschung, DZL), is committed to research on the most widespread lung diseases.

Using a novel, integrative approach we bring together basic and clinical research in order to achieve progress in prevention as well as diagnostic and therapeutic practice of lung diseases. Especially the close cooperation with the other sites of the DZL yields in scientific and medical progress.

In ARCN we focus our studies on the following areas:

  • Asthma & Allergy
  • Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (COPD) and
  • Lung Cancer

Moreover we work on:

  • Pulmonary Hypertension
  • Acute Lung Injury and Pneumonia
  • Diffuse Parenchymal Lung Diseases (DPLD) and
  • Cystic Fibrosis

The areas are linked by two platforms:

  • Platform Imaging and
  • Platform Biobanking

In the first funding period (2011-15) ARCN received financial support of approx. 12 mio. €. 90% of these funds were provided by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (‘Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung’, BMBF) and 10% by the Ministry of Social Affairs, Health, Science and Equal Opportunities (‘Ministerium für Soziales, Gesundheit, Wissenschaft und Gleichstellung’) of the Federal State of Schleswig-Holstein.
