Two ARCN scientists named as Highly Cited Researcher 2025

Martin Reck (Großhansdorf) and Stefan Schreiber (Kiel) have once again been named ‘Highly Cited Researchers’ for 2025. They are the only members of the ARCN to be among the most cited researchers in their respective fields. This was the result of an evaluation of papers from the last eleven years, carried out by the media analysis company Clarivate.

Martin Reck is the only ARCN researcher in the field of clinical medicine to be among the most frequently cited scientists in the world. For Stefan Schreiber, this is in the “cross-field” category. This category includes interdisciplinary publications or publications in various fields. Reck has been a Highly Cited Researcher since 2019 and Schreiber since 2014.

This year’s list comprises 7,131 Highly Cited Researcher Awards in total, and 6,868 individuals who have been cited very frequently by their peers. Some of these individuals have been recognised in multiple fields of the humanities and natural sciences. A high citation rate is generally considered an indication of a paper’s or researcher’s great relevance to their field.

Analysis based on quantitative and qualitative criteria

This year’s analysis included papers published between 2014 and 2024. Clarivate considered the top one percent of researchers in each of the 21 fields of humanities and sciences examined. Following this purely quantitative evaluation, qualitative criteria were also applied: for example, authors with an excessively high self-citation rate, or who had previously had to retract publications due to scientific misconduct, were excluded. Clarivate also disregarded journal articles with more than 30 co-authors. The media analysis company Clarivate maintains publication databases that are subject to high-quality standards.
